Douglas Wesley Oliver, 98, returned to his heavenly home on November 14, 2023, after a courageous battle with a long illness. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace.
Douglas was born to Millicent Itura Cook and James Albert Cook in Bathsheba, St. Joseph, Barbados, on September 8, 1925. His mother immersed him in the Christian community from a young age. As a boy, he worshipped with his parents at St. Aidan's Anglican Church and developed a strong love for God during these formative years.
Douglas migrated to the USA in 1948. With a passion, zeal, and curiosity for learning, he pursued higher education at NYC Technical College. Later, he took up a job at the Wall Street Station Post Office in Manhattan, where he rose from the role of Letter Carrier to a Postal Supervisor. This achievement reflected his mantra of dedication to God in everything he did.
Douglas was also blessed with a large and loving family. He married his best friend, Violet, who caught his eye at a movie theatre, and the marriage grew stronger and stronger for 70 golden years until his death. He was fortunate to be the father of two children, Dr. Keith Oliver and Jennifer Oliver.
Douglas is survived by his wife Violet, son Keith, sisters Margaret, Jean, Hilda, and Ena, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is preceded in death by his daughter, parents, sisters, Louise and Elsie, and brothers, Cassie, Carlton, and George.
Douglas's family will host a funeral service on Friday, December 8, 2023, at 1:00 pm
The service will be at Siloam Presbyterian Church, 260 Jefferson Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, 11216.
We look forward to the heavenly reunion with him when Christ comes.
